The Korean martial arts began more than 2,000 years ago and have evolved into the modern day fighting technique called TaeKwon-Do. TaeKwon-Do means "Foot, Hand, Art". Tae = Foot Kwon = Hand Do = Art or Way.
The founder of Modern TaeKwon-Do was General Choi Hong Hi, 9th Degree Black Belt and Grand Master.
TaeKwon-Do is an Art that implies a way of thinking about life and particularly in instilling a moral civilization and generating the power of justice. Through the knowledge and understanding of the Student's Oath and the Tenets of TaeKwon-Do, a student can find values and solutions to problems regardless of age, social status, or sex, to effectively participate in the social and play demands of their peers while still remaining true to themselves (not bow to peer pressure).
Through the guiding hand of a qualified Instructor, TaeKwon-Do can serve as an aid to the misguided, insecure, and physically weak. Every movement in TaeKwon-Do is designed for a specific purpose, and a skillful Instructor can develop in the student a belief that success is possible for anyone.
The underlying theme to this is: "The body and mind should interact as one". Often, we try to improve our bodies and neglect our minds. Therefore, mental training must always be stressed to prevent the student from misusing TaeKwon-Do. Always remember, that the brain is sheltered within the frame of the body. So the student, who comes to truly understand the Art, realizes that the mind and body must be developed together.
Men, Women, and Children ages 4 to 94 have benefitted from TaeKwon-Do.
TaeKwon-Do will enhance your self-image, as it helps you feel stronger emotionally, while it improves your discipline and concentration.
TaeKwon-Do, like many martial arts, was originally developed to give people the ability to protect themselves, their property and / or country. A means for protection without having to carry weapons. This kept the element of surprise on their side, which allowed them to easily overcome any assailant. TaeKwon-Do is also more than just physical fitness, fighting skills, and conditioning. It goes beyond self-defense. It is also concerned with developing the mind with the body. This Art gives some guidlines on how to be a "Doer" not a "Sayer", through the application of the Student's Oath and the Tenets of TaeKwon-Do. This training can be compared to a journey. It begins with the students ability to learn, to extend him / herself further than thought possible and to not give up.
We wish you the best of fortune in this newly found interest and we hope you learn the true value of this Art and how this new power can make you a better person.
