Classes

Most "open" classes are just that, they are open to all ages and belt ranks.  Classes typically run for about 1 hour.

Before you attend your first class you will be given some one-on-one orientation classes with our instructors to help you get a feel for what you'll be doing in regular classes.  These first lessons are meant to get the student ready to enter a class with some familiarity of procedures and terminology.  The student will also learn procedures for respect, learning about the uniform / belt, and more general information about the School and history of TaeKwon-Do.

When classes start the Instuctor will call the class to line up.  Respond with a loud "Yes Sir / Ma'am" and then students are to line up in belt rank order from the highest ranking Black Belt (or Senior student) thru White belt.   At this point the Pledge of Allegiance is recited along with the Student's Oath.

After the Instuctor has given the class directions it is the role of the Senior student to set the pace (unless otherwise indicated by the Instructor). The class should function as a unit, and work together throughout the exercises.

Just about every class you attend will begin with warm-up exercises and calisthenics.  This includes stretching and joint rotations, and exercises to step up your heart rate and increase oxygen flow, building up stamina and muscle tissue.

Classes may then be focused on a variety of different activities.  A typical TaeKwon-Do class could include learning patterns, kicking drills, step-sparring, free sparring, partner work, and bag work to name a few.  Overall you'll get a mood lifting, life rewarding, overall body workout that can burn up to 600 calories per hour!

About RESPECT and Learning

The Golden Rule of Martial Arts

I SHALL NEVER PRACTICE MY MARTIAL ART ON ANYONE WITHOUT HIS/HER PERMISSION.  I SHALL NEVER USE MY MARTIAL ART OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL UNLESS IN SELF-DEFENSE AND AS AN ABSOLUTE LAST RESORT.

It is important for the student to know and observe the rules of courtesy and respect.

  • Never criticize a higher ranking belt!  This is a display of disrespcet to the higher belt and the Art.  It is the privilege of either an equal or higher ranking belt to offer such criticism only.  The lower belt should only offer his/her suggestions and opinions when asked to by the higher belt.
  • Never be disrespectful to the Instructor!  Although a student is allowed to disagree, the student must obey the Instructor's final decision.
  • With that said, at this School we are striving for a family type atmosphere, so we encourage an open dialoge between students and Instructors.  Please remember, there are no dumb questions!  You are here to learn, we are here to help you learn.  If you have questions, please speak up.  Just remember to ask them with respect.
  • Refer to Black Belts by only by using Mr / Mrs/ Ms or by Sir or Ma'am.
  • While in class, do not tie your belt or fix your uniform while facing a Black Belt (or the flags).  Do not turn your back on the Instuctor unless doing something he / she requests.
  • Never tire of learning. A good student can learn anywhere at any time.  This is the secret of knowledge.
  • Always set a good example for lower ranking belts.  It is only natural that they will attempt to emulate senior students.
  • Remember that the students conduct outside the classroom is a direct reflection on the Art and the School.
  • Never break a trust with another person, whether it is in the School or outside of it.
  • When an Instructor asks you to take a step (or steps) always count out loud and at the end of each number say sir/ma'am.  (ex.  Hana Sir, Dul Sir, Set Sir...)
  • When an Instuctor asks you a question, you will first come to attention and then answer, again using Sir / Ma'am when you are finished.
  • Always RUN, when called to an area in class answering the Instructor with a "Here Sir / Ma'am!"
  • To ask a question, raise your hand and come to attention when acknowledged.
  • Refrain from idle talk during class.
  • Do not be late for a class.  This shows a lack of courtesy to your fellow students and the Instructor who is teaching that class.  If you are late, you must bow to the Instructor, then ask permission to attend class before entering the floor.  It is the Instructor's decision whether or not you are allowed to attend that class and if he/she reqests a task or duty to be performed before entering class because of your tardiness.
